The Houthis were not part of the Israel–Hamas conflict when it began in October 2023. Yet within weeks, the Yemen-based armed group started firing missiles toward Israel and attacking ships in the Red Sea. These actions turned a local war into a wider regional crisis with global economic effects.

Who Are the Houthis?

The Houthis, officially called Ansar Allah, are a political and armed movement based in Yemen. They have controlled much of northern Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, since 2014. The group has fought a long civil war against Yemen's internationally recognised government and has received military and political support from Iran, although many analysts say it also makes its own strategic decisions. 

Why Did They Join the War?

The Houthis said they entered the conflict to show support for Palestinians during Israel's military campaign in Gaza. They declared that they would target Israel and ships they believed were linked to Israel until the fighting in Gaza stopped and humanitarian aid reached the territory. 

However, experts believe there were several reasons behind their decision:
Political messaging: Supporting the Palestinian cause increased the group's popularity among some supporters in Yemen and across the region. 

Regional influence: 

The attacks strengthened the Houthis' position within the network of Iran-backed groups often called the "Axis of Resistance." 

Strategic leverage: By threatening one of the world's busiest shipping routes, the Houthis gained international attention and increased their bargaining power. 

Why the Red Sea Matters

Instead of only targeting Israel directly, the Houthis focused many attacks on commercial ships passing through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This narrow waterway connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and is a key route for trade between Asia and Europe.

As shipping companies diverted vessels around Africa to avoid attacks, transport costs, insurance premiums, and delivery times increased. These disruptions affected businesses and consumers worldwide, including in India and Europe

The Wider Impact

The attacks prompted military responses from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Israel, increasing tensions across the Middle East. Meanwhile, Yemen's own peace process became more difficult as the conflict expanded beyond its borders.
